  • An Update on FEMA Funds and Mobile Homes

The Bloomsburg Daily had a chance to talk with Eugene Brezeny from the FEMA News Desk in Harrisburg this morning.  The goal was to get a status update on the amount of funds disbursed to Columbia County at this point, as well as to get an update on the status of FEMA mobile homes and when they might show up in the area. Not By Memory Alone

It’s critical that we not rely on memory, on word of mouth for that type of an emergency. Because if it’s four decades from now, we’re going to need to have everything compiled, have this written, memorialized. –Mayor Dan Knorr, October 18th, 2011 Records of the 1972 flood exist to be sure, but they don’t tell the entire story. There are pictures, maps, lists of names and statistics. But what these records lack is the immediate story, the conversation that takes place daily among friends and neighbors, the conversation that has taken and is still taking place in the streets…

  • Can We Afford to Play Politics with Disaster Relief?

My heart goes out to my neighbors and friends in Fernville and the rest of the area that were hit hardest by this disaster.  I have witnessed an amazing response by so many individuals and organizations.  I’m proud to be a member of a community that is willing to help others in tough times.  It’s these values and principals that bind a community like ours together.I was amazed to see the initial clean up effort that occurred in Fernville soon after the flood — people and machinery working to clear debris, the American Red Cross offering food and water, meals being…

8:00 Mayor: Getting Federal dollars is more difficult due to lack of earmarks. Money is awarded to best project on cost basis, rather than influence over political leaders. 7:58 Resident: With future flood plans, is it possible to coordinate flood planning efforts with towns upriver? Mayor responds that he would like to see a regional plan, but also feels that he needs to fight specifically for his town against other communities in getting flood protection. 7:55 Resident concerned that Emergency Services, waking people at 2AM to evacuate, only told people to “get out” with no information on specifically where to…

  • A Reminder From The Bloomsburg Daily

For those of you not aware, The Bloomsburg Daily was born on October 1st, 2011. We began this site because, quite simply, we had questions that we couldn’t find the answers to. That isn’t to say that the information we sought (and continue to seek) isn’t already out there somewhere; we just couldn’t easily find it. So it occurred to us that others may be in the same position. We made this space to share whatever answers we find with you. The site will continue to evolve and (hopefully) grow. We are very excited about the prospects that lie ahead.…
